David Caldwell (1725-1824) was graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1761, before John Witherspoon brought Scottish Common Sense Realism to the College. He was licensed to preach in 1763 and ordained a Presbyterian minister 1765. Later that year, he started a log cabin school in Guilford County and pastored two churches in North Carolina. His most famous student was Barton Stone. He preached often at Hawfields Presbyterian Church, where Barton Stone was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister. Though Stone was educated by Mr. Caldwell, not much is known of their relationship after Stone left the Presbyterian Church. .
