The Rise and Progress of Religion in the
Soul For the 21st Century

The famous 1745 classic by Phillip Doddridge re-written
by Patrick McIntyre for today’s Evangelicals

Phillip Doddridge (1702-1751) was an evangelical minister, known best for his writings on regeneration. The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul (1745), was published during the First Great Awakening and represents the Biblical view of salvation preached by evangelical ministers George Whitefield (1714-1770), and Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), who knew, respected, and approved of Doddridge’s works.
Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) wrote, “Personally, I have to bless God for many good books; I thank Him for Dr. Doddridge's Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul; for Baxter's Call to the Unconverted; for Alleine's Alarm to Sinners; and for James's Anxious Enquirer”. All four of these books have been carefully retyped (not OCR), and are available at no charge as PDF downloads at www.christianebooks.com/spurgeon.

The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul For the 21st Century

The 1745 book written by Phillip Doddridge was used in the first Great Awakening.
This modern version can be used in another Awakening.

The First Great Awakening changed England and America. America is still seen as a mighty fortress of evangelical salvation. But evangelical religion in America is a mile wide and an inch deep...and what’s left is quickly evaporating. In 2002, George Barna estimated 7 ½% percent of Americans were Christian according to Bible standards. In 2025, it has dropped to 5%. ONE THIRD GONE! Unless American ministers start telling their congregations the truth of their lost condition, the decline will continue.

Unfortunately, most “evangelicals” believe they’re saved because they repeated a salvation prayer. Biblical assurance of salvation can come only from axiomatic fruits of repentance and faith, and secondarily, the inward witness of the Holy Spirit.

Revivals start with church people becoming aware of their lost condition, and from there, it spreads. That’s why Phillip Doddridge wrote The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul during the First Great Awakening. That’s also the purpose of this book. Please give this book to your pastor. Unless God gives ministers the grace to tell their congregations the truth of their condition, there will likely be no revival.

 INTRODUCTION

There are three things emphasized in this modern edition.

 1) Supernatural regeneration and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

In 1745, “evangelical salvation” was validated by Biblical evidence (fruit) of supernatural regeneration and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. But most “evangelicals” today believe they’re saved because they’ve made, (from their unregenerate point of view), a sincere “decision for Christ". In this modern version, the Biblical evidence of regeneration and the influence of the indwelling Holy Spirit is clearly explained

 2) Exposing “decisional regeneration” as heresy.

Doddridge could never have imagined the evolution of salvation heresy that’s taken place in the last 125 years. In 1745, Reformed ministers distinguished between rational faith (even devils have rational faith according to James 2:19), and the gift of saving faith, which always, axiomatically, produces good fruit. John the Baptist said, “Bring forth fruit worthy of repentance” (Luke 3:8). Christ said. “He who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me” (Matthew 10:38), and “They shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy” (Revelation 3:4). The Greek word translated “worthy” is “axios”, which means “self-evident proof”. But today, many “evangelical” ministers have abandoned Biblical evidence for the “new improved” way of getting people saved, so this modern heresy must be addressed.

 3) Emphasis on trying to keep God’s laws as essential to understanding sin and salvation.

In 1745, the typical reader understood sin as breaking God’s laws, and the value of Law Works to illuminate the understanding, but most ministers today bypass this essential subject, and go right to “make a decision for Christ”. The modern gospel says sinners can be saved without knowing the depravity of their heart, so in this modern version, I emphasize “through the Law comes the knowledge (epignosis – profound understanding) of sin” (Romans 3:19-20).
